Sid 3

On August 10 1628 Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage to the harbor of Stockholm. In the harbor a gust of wind forced the ship on her portside, after which water started flowing in through her open gun ports, and she soon sank, killing about 50 sailors.

After its sinking, most of the ship's valuable bronze cannons were recovered with the use of a diving bell. Access to the cannons required removing the decking at several levels.

Birka
ansgarThe Birka archaeological site, located on Björkö in Lake Mälaren and occupied in the 9th and 10th centuries, and Hovgården, on the neighbouring island of Adelsö, make up an archaeological complex which illustrates the elaborate trading networks of Viking Age Europe and their influence on the subsequent history of Scandinavia. Birka was also important as the site of the first Christian congregation in Sweden, founded in 831 by Saint Ansgar.

Drottningholm

Drottningholm, or literally "Queen's Islet", is a village on the island Lovön in lake Mälaren on the outskirts of Stockholm (Ekerö Municipality), Sweden. The Drottningholm Palace, the residence of the Swedish royal family since 1981, is located here. The village was planned and built in the mid 18th century for the people working at the palace. It is a good example of how a Swedish village would have looked like in the 18th and 19th centuries, containing many picturesque houses and villas.

To get to Drottningholm by public transport one takes the metro to Brommaplan, then an Ekerö-bound SL bus.
