| The Bellman house |
|
| On the island of Södermalm, not far from
Slussen you will find the house of Carl
Michael Bellman. |

Bellman is a central figure in the Swedish
song tradition and remains a very important influence in Swedish
music to this day.
His main two works are the Songs of Fredman ("Fredmans
sånger") and the Epistles of Fredman ("Fredmans
epistlar"), each including some 70 songs, many of which
are about sociable drinking and or designed for the occasion
of the same. The main themes of Bellman's poetry are fear
of death, the joy of inebriation and the pursuit of sexual
pleasure. |

| His songs reflects aspects of the life for the
common man in 18th century Stockholm, but by his composition
Gustafs skål, an informal royal anthem, he had also acquired
the patronage of King Gustav III of Sweden. |

| Regalskeppet Vasa |
|
Regalskeppet Vasa (also Wasa) is a Swedish
64-gun ship of the line built for King Gustavus Adolphus of
Sweden of the House of Vasa, between 1626 and 1628. The ship's
construction was plagued by interference from the King. Shortly
after the keel had been laid the king insisted that it be
lengthened significantly. The master shipwright who had been
overseeing the construction became ill and died leaving his
inexperienced apprentice in charge of construction.

The king then insisted on the addition of
a second gun deck. The resulting vessel was the best equipped
and most heavily armed warship of its day, but one that was
too long and tall for its width. The standard stability test
of the day was thirty sailors running from side to side trying
to rock the boat. When this was attempted on Vasa, the ship
tilted significantly and the test was canceled. As none dared
inform the king, the ship readied for sea.
