Det här är inget för mello-kids eller de som vill headbanga sig in till grannen genom tegelväggen. Den här plattan ärm vad man skulle kunna kalla, om man gillar att svänga sig med etablerade genreklyschor: ”Medium Heavy Sophisticated RockSynth/SynthRock with a unique and highly interesting vocalist”.
Det första som slår ens öppna sinne, är att plattan växer oerhört mycket för varje gång man spelar den i sin helhet. Det är ingen ”Symfoni” men på något sätt lyfter varje spår nästa.. och nästa spår ger en klarhet till föregående. Detta gör också att man vill undvika att plocka ut enskilda spår som bättre än andra, det finns egentligen inga ”utfyllnadsspår på albumet.
Bandet är en duo, bestående av sångare, gitarrist och song writer Erik Johnsson, samt studiotekniker D. Kaufeldt. Hur samarbetet inför detta album framskred, kan du läsa längst ned här, direkt från källan.
Nåväl, Erik Johnsons röst är något speciellt. Den osar maskulinitet och har många likheter med en ung Jim Morrison (The Doors legendariske sångare). Till detta ett lätt vibrato i stil med Bryan Ferry,s amt en tonklang som en av de största synthbandvokalisterna, vars namn i skrivande stund fallit ur den ”interna hårddisken”.
Bättre betyg än så, är det nog svårt att få som sångare. Att han dessutom har vissa lätta utseendelikheter med Morrison, gör ju inte saken sämre…för honom…

Risken med att vara genreöverskridande, är att många presumtiva fans och lyssnare inte törs anamma verket, då de är rädda att svika sin grundplattform inför sina vänner.
I det här fallet skulle det dock rekommenderas att vara fullständigt otrogen, låsa upp genrelådan och släppa in Fake Moss med helt öppet sinne. Låt kvalitet gå före upplöjda spår, så kommer du att få en riktigt njutbar stund med Fake Moss, vars namn inte på något sätt återspeglar plattans innehåll.
Frontface ger Fake Moss / Under The Great Black Sky betyget FFFF+, vilket kunde ha blivit full pott… med ett annat bandnamn.. glöm Kate Moss…
Här kommer bakgrundsstoryn vi fått från Playground Music:
After a three year hiatus following the barely noticable dissolution of the earlier four-piece incarnation of the band, vocalist, guitarist and song writer Erik Johnsson decided it was time to record some music again.
Teaming up in 2008 with D. Kaufeldt – the engineer for the EP ”She´s smashing the room again” and the album ”It’s you against the city tonight” – some seriously unfocused studio sessions on an irregular basis commenced.
From Erik’s ever growing collection of great demos, snippets/riffs and/or lyrics, 11 songs were quite quickly assembled and boiled down to their essentials, then developed and confirmed as good enough to continue working with.
The primary problem was figuring out how the songs were going to sound in the end.
The duo quite early on decided against making normal music, so the process of figuring out what ”normal” vis-à-vis ”not normal” exactly meant inevitably took rather a long time. Four years to be precise.
In around 2012 most of the ideas had been recorded, but they were a complete mess which had to be sorted. This required another two years. So obviously, no short cuts were taken. If a broken plate reverb was needed, a plate reverb was built and then broken. Hopefully these efforts can be heard.
Apart from a few common musical denominators of Johnsson & Kaufeldt (e.g. the vocal reverb on Diary of a madman, early OMD and David Bowie), inspiration was sought in visuals rather than sounds. One image per song was verbalized and served as a template for the sound. For instance an old man in a freezer in front of a table full of food, or a green Jaguar with two (possibly dead) people in it.
